Here’s an idea: Make videos, aimed at a young audience, who you think will watch those videos on their phones.

it’s a popular idea! As you may have heard, every single digital publisher and TV network is trying a version of this. So is Facebook. So is Snap. So is Verizon. So is Jeffrey Katzenberg. You’re probably doing this, too.

Add one more to the long list: Rob Fishman, who is trying to do this with Brat, his new studio/production/distribution start-up in Los Angeles. You can see some of the stuff Brat has worked on over on YouTube, with lots more to come.

One difference between Fishman and everyone else trying this: Fishman may have a decent idea of what young audiences like to watch because Fishman’s last company specialized in working with people who appealed to young audiences.

In 2013, Fishman co-founded Niche, which connected “influencers” on platforms like Twitter and Instagram with advertisers who wanted to work with them. Twitter bought Niche in 2015 (for at least $30 million, and likely much more, at least according to some people on the sales side of that deal), and Fishman worked there until last fall. (His co-founder, Darren Lachtman, left this month.)

The through-line here is that Fishman figures he can work with the same kind of digital native talent he used to work with at Niche. But instead of brokering ad deals for them, he will give them a chance to make videos for his studio.

“I look at each of the creators we work with as an under-leveraged media property,” Fishman says. Example: Kristen Hancher has 16.6 million fans on Musical.ly, the lip-syncing app, and she’s starting to build a base on other platforms, too. Now Fishman has created a series of three-minute clips for her with the help of digital production power house One Push Creative:

One big difference between Niche and Brat: Four years ago, Fishman was in a brand-new field (which quickly became populated by competitors). This time around, everyone is making videos, all the time. So distinguishing your work/company/brand from everyone else’s is much harder.

I’ve had several conversations with Fishman over the last few weeks, trying to find a concise way to explain how his approach differs from competitors. In the end, this may be the kind of thing you just have to see when you see it.

“It’s one of those things, where there’s this sentiment that everyone’s doing it. But if you look at who’s doing it well, we feel pretty good about what we’re doing.”

In the meantime, Fishman has $2.5 million in funding from a wide constellation of investors, including Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Advancit, Box Group and The Chernin Group, to figure it out.

Newly minted digital company Brat has unveiled its fall slate with recognizable players including Annie LeBlanc, Hayden Summerall, MaeMae Renfrow, Meghan McCarthy, Madeleine Byrne, and Cristian Oliveras, Variety has learned exclusively.

Founded by Rob Fishman — who previously started Niche, a digital marketing company acquired by Twitter — the company is backed by Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Shari Redstone’s Advancit Capital, and the Chernin Group.

For its lineup of fall series, Brat took over a high school near Pasadena, Calif., and filmed a slate of overlapping shows set in the same fictional high school. In the “Attaway High” universe, characters cross over between various productions in order to foster an environment that approximates a typical American high school. The company teamed with talent manager Matt Dugan and digital production house One Push Digital Creative.

“With our fall slate, we’re creating iconic stories and characters for this generation of viewers,” said production chief Asher Levin. “We’re bringing back the honest, irreverent and sexy programming that resonated with young audiences in the ’80s and ’90s.”

The shows include workplace comedy “Attaway Appeal,” set in the school newspaper with Renfrow, from Nickelodeon’s “Hunter Street,” starring. The show also features YouTuber Motoki Maxted and Aidette Cancino. It’s written by Mike Grimm and directed by Chris Campbell.

“Turnt” is a teen soap about romance in the age of Snapchat and stars Byrne, Oliveras (TV’s “Wildnout”), model Elsie Hewitt, and Nate Wyatt. The show is written by Rachel Stern and directed by Will Slocombe (“The Escort”).

“Chicken Girls” is a coming-of-age story starring YouTube collaborators Summerall and LeBlanc. The ensemble story follows a group of dancers known by their pet name, the Chicken Girls. The show is written by Janey Feingold and directed by Ethan Dawes.

“Flunky’s Upset” is a political satire centered on the student government, starring McCarthy with an ensemble cast including Musical.ly performer and trans activist Raegan Beast, and YouTubers Chandler Alexis and Denzel Dion. “Upset” is written by Meg Favreau and directed by Jeff Jenkins.

“Theater Kids” is a behind-the-scenes look at a high school production of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” starring Tayler Holder and Kelianne Stankus. It’s written and directed by Jonah Feingold.

How did you get into acting?
Dylan: “I’ve always wanted to be an actor, and one day an agency found my oldest brother, Jimmy and it helped me get my foot into the door.
Hayden: “I’ve been acting since I can remember. I love the challenge of being someone you’re not on film.”

Are you similar to your character?
Dylan: “I would say I’m pretty similar, especially when it comes to girls. He’s extremely awkward and nervous, but only because he cares so much and tries his hardest to make sure they’re happy and taken care of.”
Hayden: “I’m way different. In real life, I’m pretty chill and low key.”

Does that make it more fun to play, or more challenging?
Dylan: “There were times I stepped out of my comfort zone, which personally I think makes it more fun. I enjoy a good challenge and trying new things.”

What do you think fans will think of the series?
Dylan: “They’ll love it! It’s very relatable with the romance, teen awkwardness and messy situations. It’s also full of good life lessons that you can take away from it.”
Hayden: “I think fans will love it because it’s totally different from me in everyday life. I think that it will have a little bit older fan-base than some of my other stuff, but hopefully some of the fans will also relate the the new show I’ll be filming with Brat next month.”

Starring 18-year-old Kristen Hancher — one of the top performers in the world on Musical.ly (a social media platform for creating and sharing short vids, if you’re unfamiliar) — the show is described as a modern-day I Love Lucy. With nearly 15 million followers on Musical.ly and almost 3.5 Instagram followers, it’s safe to say this up-and-comer is one to have on your radar. She’s most definitely on ours, that’s for sure. What’s more, last year, the Canadian-born social media star was nominated for Choice Muser at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards, and just last month she did a lip synch rendition of “Regret In Your Tears” alongside Nicki Minaj that more or less knocked our socks off.

That said, Misshaps will be her very first move into scripted content, and we couldn’t be more excited for her and this next-level venture she’s embarking on. The first episode is under three minutes long (perfect for viewing whether you’re on the subway, waiting for your friend to come over, or whenever you have a spare few minutes to kill) and will leave you wanting more. Produced by Brat, a new media company built alongside rising creators, this is the first original series to debut — and it’s both hilarious and hella relatable. With each short episode dealing with normal teen scenarios always going comically awry, they make it super-easy to connect with the characters and see similar situations going on in your own life. Now enough chit chat — check out the first full episode here and make sure to subscribe to our channel for updates, It only takes just ONE PUSH.
